This page explains what merttoka.com collects when you visit and what I do with it. The site is run by me, Mert Toka, personally. The lab at lab.merttoka.com has its own privacy page (opens in a new tab).
What I collect
Visits. I use Google Analytics, the same account as lab.merttoka.com, to count visits and see which pages people read. It sets cookies in your browser and records the pages you view, how you arrived, your device and browser, and your approximate location (city and country, worked out from your IP address). Google Analytics does not store IP addresses.
How the home page's animation ran. The animated background on the home page picks a graphics level that suits your device and tells Google Analytics which level it settled on, where it started, how smoothly it ran, and your GPU's maker (for example apple), not its model. Nothing in it identifies you.
Email. If you write to me, I keep your message and your email address to reply.
On your device only. The site keeps a few things in your browser's storage so they're there next time: the light or dark theme, the graphics level that suits your device, and whether you view projects, prototypes and research as a grid or a list. Until you close the tab it also keeps the filters you picked, where you were in a list (so the back button returns you there), and whether the graphics level has been measured. None of this is sent to me.
There are no accounts, forms or ads on this site, and I don't sell personal information.
Who else receives it
Google runs Google Analytics and serves the site's font (Manrope, from Google Fonts), so your browser contacts Google's servers. Google explains how it uses information from sites that use its services (opens in a new tab).
Cloudflare serves the site's icons (Font Awesome, from cdnjs), so your browser contacts Cloudflare's servers (opens in a new tab).
YouTube and Vimeo. A project page with a YouTube video loads its thumbnail from YouTube. Playing a video loads YouTube's or Vimeo's player, which sets its own cookies under Google's (opens in a new tab) or Vimeo's (opens in a new tab) privacy policy.
My web host serves the site and logs visitors' IP addresses in its server logs.
Your email provider and mine (Gmail) handle the messages you send me.
Your choices
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, or install Google's Analytics opt-out add-on (opens in a new tab). The site works the same with either. It does not respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals; the two options above stop analytics instead.
How long I keep it
Google Analytics keeps visit data for 14 months after your last visit. I keep emails as long as the conversation needs them.
Children
This site is not directed at children under 13, and I do not knowingly collect their information.
